Paper Airplanes and Dissertations

May 26th is Paper Airplane Day. Do you remember the feeling of accomplishment the first time you got a paper airplane to fly? Wouldn’t you love to have that same feeling again? You can…by finishing your dissertation!…

Paper airplanes. You can make them complicated, and you can make them simple. What really matters is, can they fly?

It always happens with little kids: they make a simple paper airplane and it flies great. Then they start adding all kinds of bells and whistles and suddenly their airplanes don’t fly anymore. Time to go back to basics.

Just like with paper airplanes, it pays to keep it simple with your dissertation.

Have you had this experience with your dissertation? Everything makes sense, you’re chugging along, getting things done. Then, suddenly, you find yourself off track. It may be time to hit pause and really assess what’s going on.

Are you following a simple plan? Or, have you allowed yourself to chase down multiple side topics and tangents?

If you’ve gotten off track, don’t worry. Revisit your plan.

Now look at what you’re actually doing. If your current efforts don’t align with your plan, then it’s time to excise those sections that have gone off task.

Make sure your dissertation is light enough to fly! Remember…simpler is better.
