POTUS 16 and Dissertations

February 12th marks the birthday of the 16th President of the United States. Here’re some words of wisdom from Abraham Lincoln that you can apply to your dissertation…

On Planning:

Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.
— Abraham Lincoln

Careful planning at the beginning of the dissertation journey eases stress, erases confusion, and empowers you to avoid roadblocks and obstacles that will confound your less-prepared colleagues.

On Persistence:

I am a slow walker, but I never walk back.
— Abraham Lincoln

You don’t have to go max effort to make progress and graduated quickly. Just 10-15 hours of steady progress each week can get you to graduation months or years before your peers.

On Success:

My great concern is not whether you have failed, but whether you are content with your failure.
— Abraham Lincoln

That some achieve great success, is proof to all that others can achieve it as well.
— Abraham Lincoln

The fact that others have succeeded before is all the proof you need that you can do it, too! The problem is that you need to know how they did it in order to emulate their success.
