Pots of Gold and Dissertations

March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day. But, you don’t need to find a four-leaf clover to graduate, and you don’t need to catch a leprechaun to find your dissertation pot of gold…

How do you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day? I know the first thing that comes to most people’s minds, and let me assure you that rivers of green beer have almost nothing to do with finishing your dissertation. On the contrary, they may get you a bit off track!

But, before our current St. Patty’s traditions took hold, this was dedicated to the life of a 5th century man who came to be known as the Patron Saint of Ireland. And, guess what? Just like a doctoral student, St. Patrick wrote a couple of things in his life, like the Declaration and the Letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus. But, was St. Patrick best known as writer? Nope. Are his works considered masterpieces? Not at all.

St. Patrick is best known for his life’s work, which was converting the Irish people to his faith. He didn’t do that with writing, he did that with his “regular job” of being a missionary, which he was pretty darn good at!

I’m sure that you’re pretty awesome at what you do, too. And, maybe you’ve started to feel like writing a dissertation isn’t really your thing. But, how about the next-level of opportunities you’ll have available to you and the things you’ll be able to achieve once you have that doctoral title next to your name? More money, better job, serving others…what are your goals?

St. Patrick’s writing helped him to get to the next level… sainthood, in his case. What does your next level look like? What’s in the pot of gold at the end of your rainbow?
