Opposites and Dissertations

January 25th is Opposite Day. Celebrate the day by considering doing the opposite of what everyone tells you to do for your dissertation…

  • Instead of choosing a topic you’re passionate about, pick choose a topic that holds only marginal interest for you but that you can tolerate.
  • If you’re just starting out, don’t choose a topic at all, consider what you can logistically do and build from there.
  • Rather than writing your Problem Statement or Chapter 1, in general, first, start the writing process by thoroughly outlining the last chapter of your proposal.
  • Remember when your mom told you that your best was good enough? Well, by now your best is likely much more than good enough. Don’t do your best; do good enough!
