Near Misses and Dissertations

March 23rd is Near-Miss Day, which commemorates that one time, in 1989, when an asteroid almost destroyed the Earth, thereby allowing you to struggle with your dissertation today…

Several years ago, the 300-meter wide asteroid, cleverly named 4581 Asclepius, nearly collided with the Earth… But it didn’t!

Hooray!

As the asteroid’s discoverer, Dr. Henry Holt noted, “That was a close call.” How close? Well, the asteroid hurtled across Earth’s orbit at some 71,000 mph just 6 hours after the Earth had been there…in that exact same spot! But, it did miss. So, now every year we celebrate that time the Earth didn’tget destroyed.

What about some other near-misses? Maybe ones that weren’t so great? Like that time you could have finished your dissertation and earned your doctorate, but then you didn’t.

Don’t get stuck celebrating that anniversary every year!

Remember, your dissertation doesn’t have to be perfect. It just needs to get done!

A near miss in your doctoral program means no doctoral title, no return on the thousands of dollars you’ve invested in tuition, no expanded opportunities. You’ll be a terminal ABD instead of D-o-c.
