Festivus and Dissertations

December 23rd is Festivus! So, take a little break from your dissertation. Here’s how to celebrate…

Festivus was first popularized over 20 years ago on an episode of Seinfeld called “The Strike.” Today is a great day to watch, again. My kids will hardly let me write this blog post because they’re so excited to watch!

If you don’t want to find the full episode, here’s a quick refresher…

So, how should you celebrate?

  1. The Festivus Pole: No tinsel coated twinkled tree required. The Festivus pole is an unadorned aluminum pole.
  2. Festivus dinner is served during the evening. The dinner is most noted for the Airing of Grievances in which each person takes turns describing how the others have disappointed him or her over the past year.
  3. Dinner is followed by the Feats of Strength which involves wrestling the head of the household.
  4. Finally, some celebrations include the observance of Festivus Miracles. However, Festivus Miracles are typically mundane and unimpressive. For example, carrying in all the groceries into the house for Festivus Dinner without tripping or dropping one of the bags could be considered a Festivus Miracle.
