Being Heard and Dissertations

March 7th is Be Heard Day. As a doctoral student working on your dissertation, do you ever wish you could just be heard?…

We’ve all been there…You’re working hard. You’re giving it your all. But despite your best efforts, it seems like your committee just can’t seem to understand you.

You’d give anything just to be heard.

I’ve spoken about Dr. Stephen Covey’s book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, several times before. Habit 5 is “Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” It’s important for you to keep in mind that understanding what your committee members want is imperative to getting your dissertation done. Being heard is not.

As much as everyone calls it “your” dissertation, in  a very real sense it’s not. It’s “your” dissertation in the same sense that it’s a builder’s house or a tailor’s suit. You’re the one designing, developing, and executing the dissertation, but you’re doing so for your customer…your dissertation committee.

As much as you may want to heard, it’s far more productive to invest that energy in understanding your committee.

If you’re having trouble understanding your committee, click here to schedule a quick, 15-minute chat with me to see if you’re a good fit for our Fast Track Your Dissertation Coaching Program. If you are, then I’ll invite you to join the fastest group of dissertation students out there and help you to reach graduation a good year or two faster than you would on your own.
