Martin Luther King Jr. and Dissertations

January 15th is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. On Dr. King’s birthday the Internet will be replace with remembrances, many of them focused on his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech. What is your dream as a doctoral student?…

Dr. King’s dream was that African Americans should be treated equally under the law as well as socially. A dream can be a powerful thing. Its ability to cast a vision. Its ability to motivate.

We’ve come a long way since Dr. King shared his dream with the world. Today, many of the doctoral students I speak with everyday are African Americans struggling not just for parity or equality, but ascendancy into the academic elite.

You see, the power of dreams isn’t limited to cultural shifts. Dreams can also be deeply personal.

What dream inspired you to pursue your doctoral degree?

What dreams do you have for your life after graduation?

What opportunities will your doctoral degree allow you pursue?

What change will you enact in the world as a doctor?

Your dreams, your goals, your visions all serve as the fuel that drives your dissertation engine. But, fuel is not a map. And, an engine is not a steering wheel.

To complete your dissertation you need a dream to inspire you, but you also need a plan to frame your work, direction to guide your efforts, and deadlines to hold you accountable.
