Work-Life Balance and Dissertations

April 16th is Wilbur Wright’s birthday. Two of the most important concepts in flight are weight and balance. Ironically, as successful as they were, the Wright brothers were not known for their work-life balance…

I do not have time for both a wife and an airplane.

Do you feel like you don’t have time for anything other than your dissertation? Fill in the blank:

I don’t have time for both _____ and a dissertation.

A family?

A job?

Six pack abs?

All of the above?

If you’re not really making progress with your dissertation, it might be time to take a look at your life. Is there a way that you can make a real commitment to spend 10-15 hours a week working on your dissertation?

Can you plan around the other commitments you have to your family, your work, and maintaining your stunning physique? You’ll need to set aside time every day to really work (and I don’t mean just sit in front of your computer and look like you are working!)

Maybe you can’t. Maybe you just need to walk away. But, remember that writing a dissertation shouldn’t be as all-consuming as pioneering the first sustained flight was for the Wright Brothers. Many students are able to make a commitment of only 2 hours a day and finish their dissertation within a year or two. If you can set aside the time to really work on it, you can do it too!
