Lima Beans and Dissertations

April 20th is National Lima Bean Day. I think Lima beans get a bad rap. People hate them because they were made to eat them as a kid. Then some of those children grow up to write ice cream dissertations…

“There were lima beans for dinner and I hate limas.”
— Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Children sometimes say things like “When I grow up I’m going to eat ice cream every day and that’s it. No healthy food for me.”

You don’t run across too many adults who actually do eat this way. That’s because you need those healthy things to make you feel healthy and good.

A lot of students want to write their dissertation about something they are passionate about. I consider this the “ice cream every day” of dissertation projects. To get you where you need to be, you need to write a “lima beans dissertation.”

If you write an ice cream dissertation, you’ll spend too much time obsessing about the flavors and the toppings and how to make it extra perfect. With the lima beans dissertation, you’ll just swallow it down and move on to something else.

Don’t write a passion project! Pick a sensible topic and get it done. Eat your limas!

When prepared well lima beans really are quite delicious. My assistant swears it’s true and says this recipe is great!
