Home Offices and Dissertations

This week is Home Office Safety and Security Week. Since you probably do most of your work on your dissertation at home, here are the top 10 things you can do to improve your productivity in your home office…

Productivity experts have a lot to stay about how to set up your office space:

  1. Natural light improves focus.
  2. Plants boost productivity.
  3. The color green promotes balance, while blue stimulates concentration.
  4. Noise-canceling headphones muffle distractions.
  5. Place your monitor 20-40 inches away and at or below eye level.
  6. Arrange your desk to create a left-to-right workflow.
  7. Adjust your chair and desk height so that your feet are flat on the floor and your arms and thighs are parallel to the floor.

Good advice, all. But, for me personally, if you focus on these 3 things, you’ll be fine…

  1. Make sure that your office space is kept clean and clear of distractions. — You can’t work when your distracted. Right?
  2. Create a doctoral vision board and keep it visible. — It’s important to keep motivated should frustration or malaise set in.
  3. Back up your computer, using a cloud-based service. — If you think writing your dissertation is difficult the first time around, try recreating it from scratch when your hard drive crashes.

If your work space is organized and free of distractions but you’re still having trouble focusing, then you need to make sure that your study is organized and free of distractions. Click here to schedule a quick, 15-minute chat with me to see if you’re a good fit for our Fast Track Your Dissertation Coaching Program. If you are, then I’ll invite you to join the fastest group of dissertation students out there and help you to reach graduation a good year or two faster than you would on your own.
