Commitment and Dissertations

May 14th is National Dance Like a Chicken Day. Unfortunately, other some kind of ill-conceived commencement celebration, I just can’t tie that back to you dissertation. So, I’m going to talk about something more relevant, and important. But, if you stick with me, I’ll have a chicken-dancing treat before we’re done…

We’re more than a third of the way through year! How’re those resolutions you made back in January coming along? If you’re like most people, the commitments you made to yourself back in January may be floundering a bit.

Not to worry! May is National Recommitment Month. Here you have it, a whole month dedicated to reviewing the goals you set yourself, like finishing your dissertation, and recommitting yourself to getting them done!

You may have set yourself a goal of completing your dissertation, but completing such a big goal requires proper planning and organized follow-through. If you’ve been at it for more than a month or two, now is a good time to assess your progress.

Are the milestones and timelines you set for yourself realistic?

Have you been successfully dedicating the time each day need to make progress?

Are you on schedule?

If the answer is “No,” to any of these questions, don’t just say you’re going to recommit. Make sure you also revise your plan and make whatever changes are necessary to ensure you make progress toward your goal. Just wanting to finish your dissertation is not enough! You have to commit yourself to taking regular, purposeful action.

The main character, Tiana, in the Disney film The Princess and the Froghas a great quote about this:

“It serves me right for wishing on stars. The only way to get what you want in this world is through hard work.”

In this case, I’m all for listening to a cartoon character! Recommit, reorganize, reengage, and keep the rewards!
