Chasing Rainbows and Dissertations

April 3rd is National Find a Rainbow Day. Here are the Top 3 ways rainbows are like your dissertation…

Chasing rainbows. The pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Somewhere over the rainbow. Rainbows can transfix even the most cynical among us, striking awe and capturing the imagination. But there are three ways that rainbows remind me of dissertations:

  1. There’s Nothing There: Rainbows aren’t actually physical objects. There’s nothing really there. Sometimes your dissertation can feel like there’s nothing there, too.
  2. Can’t Get There from Here: When you try to “follow” a rainbow, it appears to recede as fast as you can chase it. The term “chasing rainbows” is actually used to describe a foolish activity or an impossible task. Do you ever feel like you’re chasing rainbows when you’re working on your dissertation?
  3. It’s a Matter of Perspective: If not facing the right direction, at the right time, under the right circumstances, you simply can’t see a rainbow. If you’re not looking at it the right way, is nearly impossible to finish your dissertation, too.

So, how do you make sure that your dissertation’s not like a rainbow?

How do you make sure there’s something there?

How can you actually catch your dissertation instead of having it recede into the distance?

What’s the right way to look at your dissertation?
